e-Compass : Finding True North

In physical science, True North refers to the actual location of the North Pole. An ordinary compass will not give you the exact bearing because it points to a Magnetic North rather than the exact location of True North. You need a formula to get the exact bearing.

In his series of books related to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey uses the concept of true north as a metaphor for principles or external realities to which our lives should be aligned. The quality of our lives depends on the degree to which we can make our lives consistent with these realities. Stephen Covey's books aim to provide the guides to help his readers find true north and judging by the books' popularity, the principles he espouses are equally embraced by a great number of people.

The message we get in both the physical and personal worlds is that True North exists and that we need a set of "tools" to lead us to it.

For the year 2001-2002, the PCS Professional Development Program (PDP) has taken as its theme the essential reality of true north and will deliver a package of sessions that will provide the tools, the compass or maps if you will, which participants can use to point them in the right direction.

What makes this year's PDP different?

1. It focuses on a theme - "e-Compass: Finding True North". Rather than embark on the impossible task of cramming information about a topic in two to three hours, the sessions aim to give participants a map or compass to help them focus on what's really important and lead them along the right path. Because we are in the IT profession, we've put an "e" before the Compass. But take "e" to mean anything; experience, education, empowerment, excellence…, whatever is meaningful to you.
2. It divides the year into 3 segments - business, education and home, around which the individual sessions are designed. Each segment is taken up in one quarter with the three quarters culminating in the IT Congress to be held in April of 2002.
3. Each half-day seminar is two sessions, back-to-back. One topic is technical or "IQ" related and the other is the soft side or the "EQ" topic. True north encompasses the professional and personal. Having two sessions reinforces the importance of balancing these two areas.
   

The PDP sessions have been designed with the PCS member in mind but we feel that the topics are relevant to all professionals in the private and public sectors as well as in the academe. Everyone is invited to attend. These sessions are free to all PCS members, for non-members, please pay P250.00 upon registration.

Because the sessions are linked together by a common theme, PCS encourages participants to attend as many sessions as possible. PCS will give out certificates at the end of each segment to those who attended all the sessions in the quarter. A special gift will also be given to each of those who were able to attend all the sessions for the year.
