OBJECTIVES OF I T EDUCATION (ITE)

     ITE prepares students to be professionals in IT. Specifically, students by the time they graduate are envisioned to:

·         have undergone training in abstract and analytical processes;

·         have developed personal and social values;

·         have acquired technical skills;

·         be grounded in appropriate concepts and principles; and

·         be adaptive to the work environment

 

STRATEGY TO ATTAIN OBJECTIVES

     ITE aims to equip students with one or more of the following:

·         the basic principles and foundation that underlie the science of this field; (Computer Science)

·         practical knowledge of how Information Systems are installed, operationalized, managed, and administered; (Information Technology)  

·         ability to conceptualize, design, develop, implement and maintain Information Systems (Information Management)

 

IT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

·      As defined by CMO #25, s. 2001, which is a revision of CMO #60, s. 1996

·      B. S. in COMPUTER SCIENCE -- the basic principles and foundation that underlie the science of I T E;

·      B. S. in INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY -- practical knowledge of how Information Systems are installed, operationalized, managed, and administered;

 

IT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

·      B. S. in INFORMATION MANAGEMENT -- ability to conceptualize, design, develop, implement and maintain Information Systems

·      ASSOCIATE in COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY -- basic program which serves as a “ladder” to the B. S. programs; (CMO # 05, s. 1998)

 

QUALIFICATIONS OF FACULTY

An ITE faculty member should have at least one of the following:

·      A bachelor’s degree in one of the ITE programs;

·      A degree in Engineering, physical sciences or mathematics, or Business field with 18 units of formal studies in ITE (bachelor’s or graduate courses);

·      A degree in a field other than ITE plus at least 3 years experience  in the I T profession such as technical support, systems design, applications programming or equivalent;

 

·      A degree in a field other than ITE plus at least 18 units of master’s study in ITE;

·      A master’s degree in a field other than ITE plus at least 2 years of experience in ITE research and 12 units of graduate study in ITE

 

ADMINISTRATION
A Higher Educational Institution offering an ITE program shall have at least two full-time members including the following: 

·         a full-time head, such as Dean, Department Chair, Director, Coordinator or equivalent based on the organization of the school

·         a full-time faculty member

 

QUALIFICATIONS OF HEAD
The HEAD must posses at least one of the ff:

·         A master’s degree in an ITE program

·         A master’s degree in another field plus at least one of the following:

o        Completion of coursework requirements for a master’s degree in an ITE program

o        Five (5) years experience in the IT profession such as in technical support, systems design, applications programming or equivalent

o        Bachelor’s degree in an ITE program

·         A doctorate in a physical science, mathematics, engineering or business field plus five (5) years experience teaching ITE courses (beyond computer literacy level courses).

·         In addition, the Head should have industry advisor(s) to assist him/her, especially if he/she does not have I T industry experience, such as a Board of Industry Advisors that could also assist in industry-academe linkage programs.

COMPUTER LABORATORY

·         A student should be provided with at least 3 hours of individual hands-on computer time per week.

·         This translates to about one computer per 20 student enrolled in ITE program.

·         At least one multi-user or networked system

·         One printer per 15 computers

·         Hardware and software should conform to generally accepted industry standards; at least 20% of the equipment should have been manufactured within the last 3 years.


 

LIBRARY

·         Should have at least 5 titles per subject offered in the curriculum;

·         Should have at least 1 volume per subject of a particular year of the curriculum for every 10 students enrolled in that year level;

·         At least 20% of the books should have been published within the last 4 year;

·         Should have at least 2 local and 2 foreign published magazines, journals or periodicals;

·         Electronic materials such as from CD-ROMS or Internet may be considered as additional library holdings beyond the minimum requirements.

·         Seating capacity of at least 5% of the total student enrolled in ITE

·         Minimum space of 60 sq.. m. or 2 sq. m.per student

 

SAMPLE CALCULATION FOR  MINIMUM LIBRARY HOLDINGS  

ASSOCIATE IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY (ACT)

·         A two-year non-degree diploma course

·         “Ladderized” program that can be credited as subjects for the Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology and Information Management

 

A C T   OBJECTIVES

·         Equip students with specific skills for entry into the information technology profession

·         Prepare the students for eventual entry into the regular baccalaureate degree programs in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Information Management

 

GENERAL CURRICULUM

·         A subset of the Basic General Education subjects

·         A subset of the Basic Core Topics and Major Topics for the baccalaureate degree: BS-CS,    BS-IT, or BS-IM

·         Other subjects that may be needed to allow the students to acquire specific I T skills (such as programming, use of personal computer software packages, etc.)

·         Minimum of 66 units, of which the General Education component comprises one-third to one-half of the total
